If you want to give wings to your career and foster personal development, it is important to pursue your undergraduate degree from a reputed university. Studying abroad for your undergraduate degree is a good decision to get all-around exposure and ensure holistic development.

Having said that, the UK is a popular destination for studying abroad owing to its long and glorious history of providing top-quality education. The UK is home to several prestigious universities and offers a myriad range of courses, making it an attractive learning hub for international students.

If you aim to pursue an undergraduate course in the UK, you need to know the key aspects of the UCAS application. Read on to learn the crucial details on how to get about your application and secure your seat in your dream university in the UK.

What is UCAS?

Universities and Colleges Admissions Service abbreviated as UCAS is a UK-based private limited company managing the centralized application process for aspirants seeking admission to UK universities.

Using the UCAS Hub (UCAS online platform), students can create an account, explore diverse courses, and submit up to five applications to their chosen universities (excluding Medicine, Dentistry, Vet Science, and Vet Medicine, wherein you can choose only four). Generally, it is advised to apply to an assortment of ambitious, attainable, and safe university options.

Please note: You can’t apply to both Cambridge and Oxford at the same time in one application cycle, you can choose only one at a time!

Ambitious options would entail universities that you are aiming for but are tough to get into. Attainable options would be those that match your academic expectations and are easier to get into, while safe options are those that precede your expectations.

In other words, aspire high, but always keep a backup to secure a seat to study in the UK, even if you do not make it to your first-choice university.

Through the UCAS monitoring system, you can track the status of your applications, waitlist positions or rejections, and also check for any available offers. Once the status is clear, you can settle on your preferred university.

UCAS Entry Requirements and Tariff Points

In order to apply through UCAS, applicants are required to meet certain entry requirements and understand the UCAS tariff points system.

  • Entry Requirements:

The entry requirements for a UCAS application tend to vary for different courses and universities in the UK. However, in general, students need to have completed a secondary education qualification such as A-levels, IB or BTEC, or an equivalent international qualification. Some programs might also require specific subjects or grades, additional qualifications, certifications, or work experience.

  • UCAS Tariff Points:

UCAS Tariff points are a system used by several UK universities to assess all applicants as equitably as possible and enable a fair selection. This system entails allotting points to different qualifications based on the time studying it and the grade achieved.

In other words, the UCAS tariff points system basically converts grade qualifications into a numerical value to assess if the applicant meets the entry requirements for particular courses.

For example, an A* level grade is worth 56 UCAS tariff points, while a grade B is worth 40 points. Also, it is worth noting that the combination of grades A* A* A* is worth 168 points, which also implies that this is the maximum numerical value of UCAS tariff points that you can attain from your qualifications. Other qualifications such as BTECs, Scottish Highers, and Irish Leaving Certificates also have equivalent UCAS Tariff point values.

But, not all colleges and universities use UCAS Tariff points, and they might have their unique entry requirements, that you would need to check for on the university website in advance.

Please note: This calculator is indicative only, and the course providers have the right to the final decision-making power.

How to apply through UCAS?

Here are the key steps for applying to undergraduate programs in UK universities through UCAS:

  • Research universities and available courses

The first step is to research the universities and courses you are interested in applying to. Use the search tool on the UCAS platform to explore the courses and universities that meet your interests and qualifications.

  • Register on the UCAS platform

Once you have shortlisted courses and universities, the next step is to register on their website, which entails providing your personal information, including your contact details, educational history, and paid employment details. In case of any unpaid internships or work experience, include it in your personal statement.

  • Choose your courses

After registering on the UCAS platform, you can apply for up to five courses. Make sure you cautiously read the entry requirements, and course descriptions before concluding your choices.

  • Complete your application

For completing the application process, you need to provide detailed information about your academic qualifications, work experience, personal statement, and references.

Pay special attention to creating your personal statement as this is your chance to express your interest in your choice of course and university, and showcase your skills and work experience in the best possible way.

Also, get a reference from your teacher or someone who can assent to your academic performance ahead of time to complete the process.

  • Submit your application and monitor its status regularly

Make the payment, check your application thoroughly for any amendments and lastly submit your application.

After submitting, keep tracking the progress of your application on the UCAS website. Once your application is reviewed by universities, you will receive offers on courses that you can choose to accept or decline.

  • Make your choice

Finally, after receiving all the offers, you will need to choose your preferred course and university and confirm your decision to UCAS by the stated deadline.
