Applicants to HEC Paris<\/a>, London Business School<\/a> and INSEAD<\/a> often assume that strong grades, an internship or two and a competitive GMAT<\/a> \/ GRE<\/a> score will carry the application. These elements can establish academic readiness, but they do not fully answer the question an admissions committee is asking: <\/span>Why will this candidate be a value-add for our MiM class and how can we help him achieve his goals?<\/b><\/p>\n

This is where the essays matter.<\/span><\/p>\n

For an early-career applicant, the essay has to do more work because there may be limited full-time experience to evaluate. Admissions officers are looking for evidence of direction, maturity, self-awareness and potential. They do not expect you to have managed large teams or transformed an industry, but they do expect you to understand what you have done, what you want to do next and why their programme is relevant.<\/span><\/p>\n

Here are <\/span>5 red flags <\/span>that can weaken an otherwise promising MiM application.<\/span><\/p>\n

1. Your essay could be sent to any business school<\/b><\/h2>\n

A typical MiM essay explains that the applicant wants \u201ca global learning experience, a diverse network and strong career opportunities.\u201d All three may be true, but they could describe almost every leading business school.<\/span><\/p>\n

HEC Paris, LBS and INSEAD are not interchangeable. Your reasoning for each should reflect the programme you are applying to.<\/span><\/p>\n

For HEC Paris, you might connect your goals with the MiM\u2019s flexible academic journey, the opportunity to specialise and the wider European business ecosystem. For LBS, your fit may involve studying in London, learning within a cohort with a strong finance foundation and gaining exposure to industries or employers relevant to your goals. For INSEAD, you should consider whether its intensive programme, multi-campus experience and international orientation genuinely suit how you want to learn and work.<\/span><\/p>\n

Simply naming courses, clubs and locations is not enough. Explain what you intend to do with those opportunities.<\/span><\/p>\n

Compare these two statements:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cLBS will provide me with a global network and access to London\u2019s tech ecosystem\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

\u201cHaving explored consumer technology through two internships, I now want exposure to product strategy and early-stage ventures. Studying in London would allow me to connect classroom learning with a market where both global technology firms and growing startups operate.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

The second answer connects the applicant\u2019s past, the programme and the next career step. That is what makes school research useful.<\/span><\/p>\n

2. Your career goals sound borrowed from an MBA essay<\/b><\/h2>\n

\u201cI want to become a global business leader\u201d is not a career plan. Neither is \u201cI want to work in consulting and eventually become an entrepreneur.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Early-career applicants sometimes use ambitious language because they believe their actual experience is not impressive enough. This often produces an essay that sounds confident but lacks credibility.<\/span><\/p>\n

A good MiM career story should begin with the first realistic step after graduation. What function interests you? Which industry or type of organisation do you want to enter? What problem would you like to work on? How have your courses, internships, projects or independent exploration led you towards that choice?<\/span><\/p>\n

You do not need to know your exact job title ten years from now. However, there should be logic connecting your present interests, the capabilities you need from the MiM and your likely post-programme role.<\/span><\/p>\n

Admissions committees are not asking for a lifelong contract. 3. You repeat your CV instead of revealing how you think<\/b><\/h2>\n

The admissions committee already knows that you completed an internship, led a university society or organised a conference. Repeating those facts in paragraph form wastes the most valuable space in the application.<\/span><\/p>\n

The essay should reveal what the CV cannot.<\/span><\/p>\n

Suppose you led a student event. The useful story is not a description of the event and the number of attendees. It may be the moment a sponsor withdrew, your team disagreed on what to cut and you had to make a difficult decision. What did you prioritise? How did you communicate with the team? What would you do differently now?<\/span><\/p>\n

That reflection shows judgment, adaptability and self-awareness.<\/span><\/p>\n

This is particularly important for applicants whose leadership experience comes from student organisations, internships, volunteering or academic projects. The scale may be modest, but the learning can still be meaningful. Admissions officers are not only measuring the size of the achievement; they are looking at the quality of thought behind it.<\/span><\/p>\n

4. You inflate limited experience instead of presenting it honestly<\/b><\/h2>\n

A three-month internship rarely makes someone an \u201cindustry expert.\u201d Helping with a startup project is not the same as building a successful company, and coordinating a student team does not need to be described as \u201cleading a cross-functional organisation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Inflated language creates two problems. First, it makes the essay sound impersonal and rehearsed. Second, it can raise questions during the interview when the applicant cannot explain the work in sufficient detail.<\/span><\/p>\n

Early-career experience does not need to be disguised. A small but genuine contribution is more persuasive than an exaggerated title. Explain what you were responsible for, what you noticed and how the experience changed your thinking.<\/span><\/p>\n

For example, an applicant who analysed customer complaints during an internship may have developed an interest in product management after seeing how operational decisions affected users. That is a credible starting point for a MiM story. The applicant does not need to claim that they \u201ctransformed the customer experience.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Precision builds credibility.<\/span><\/p>\n

5. Your application has achievements, but no connecting thread<\/b><\/h2>\n

Many strong candidates have good grades, two or three internships, club leadership, volunteering and perhaps an international experience. Yet their essays read like a collection of unrelated accomplishments.<\/span><\/p>\n

A cohesive MiM application should help the reader see a progression:<\/span><\/p>\n

An interest developed \u2192 the applicant explored it \u2192 experience revealed a skill or knowledge gap \u2192 the MiM addresses that gap \u2192 the applicant has a credible next step.<\/b><\/p>\n

This does not mean forcing every activity into one perfect story. It means selecting the experiences that best explain your decisions.<\/span><\/p>\n

An engineering student applying to consulting, for example, should not simply state that consulting offers \u201cdiverse challenges.\u201d They might explain how solving technical problems taught them structured thinking, while a market-entry project made them curious about the commercial decisions surrounding technology. The MiM then becomes a bridge between an existing analytical foundation and a new business direction.<\/span><\/p>\n

The same profile may also need different emphasis for each school. HEC Paris, LBS and INSEAD should each occupy a clear and distinct place in your application strategy. If only the school name changes while the reasoning remains identical, the essays are not ready.<\/span><\/p>\n
