You\u2019ve probably heard some version of this advice: <\/span>\u201c<\/span><\/i>Take as many APs as possible if you want Top 20s.<\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n


\n<\/span><\/i>But the real question isn\u2019t <\/span>how many<\/b> APs you can stack, it\u2019s <\/span>which APs best support your story<\/b> without tanking your grades, time, or sanity.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Because in US admissions, your transcript still does most of the talking. <\/span>NACAC\u2019s <\/span><\/a>admissions research consistently shows that grades and the strength\/rigor of a student\u2019s course load weigh more heavily than test scores in admission decisions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

So let\u2019s turn to \u201cWhich APs should I take?\u201d into a decision framework you can actually use.<\/span><\/p>\n

First, what APs are \u201cavailable\u201d?<\/h2>\n

College Board<\/span><\/a> currently lists <\/span>40 AP subjects<\/b>, grouped across disciplines like English, history\/social sciences, math & computer science, sciences, arts, and world languages.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

That\u2019s a lot, so the goal isn\u2019t to chase everything. The goal is to pick APs that signal:<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. Academic readiness for your intended major, and<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. A balanced, credible curriculum (especially if you\u2019re aiming for selective colleges)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    The mistake students make: picking APs like a \u201cdifficulty leaderboard\u201d<\/h2>\n

    Some students pick APs based on what sounds impressive, what friends are taking, or which one is easiest to score a 5 in.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Experts recommend:\u00a0 choose APs based on what you\u2019re interested in and what you already do well in, and make sure you\u2019re prepared for the level.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Also, there\u2019s <\/span>no single \u201cright number\u201d of APs<\/b>. Students should find the right balance with their counselor\/teachers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    So instead of chasing a number, build a <\/span>portfolio<\/span><\/i>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    MIT Admissions<\/span><\/a> has said it clearly: \u201cThere is no minimum or recommended number of AP courses.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

    1) Start with your likely major bucket<\/b><\/p>\n

    Even if you\u2019re not 100% sure, most students have a direction: STEM, business\/econ, liberal arts\/social sciences, pre-med-ish, or undecided.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Pick <\/span>2 to 4 APs<\/b> that act like a direct bridge to that bucket.<\/span><\/p>\n

    2) Build your core rigor spine<\/b><\/p>\n

    Selective US colleges like seeing that you didn\u2019t avoid the hard basics. A strong spine usually includes:<\/span><\/p>\n
